The centre is set to implement rules that will standardise the operating temperature range of all air conditioners between 20°C and 28°C. The government aims to control energy consumption during extreme weather, which in turn aims to reduce strain on the national power grid.

As per Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the government aims to regulate minimum AC temperature as the country is facing record-breaking heatwaves and surging electricity demand.

Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary at the Ministry of Power, stated that increasing the AC temperature by just 1°C can reduce power consumption by up to 6%, thereby lowering infrastructure costs.

Notably, several countries facing similar problems have introduced mandatory guidelines for AC temperature settings.
